In tennis, backspin (also known as slice), is a shot that makes the ball rotate backwards after contact. The trajectory of the shot involves an upwards force that lifts the ball.

Back Spin

While normal, flat shorts bounce forward, backspins shot bounce to the side or up, making the receiver uncomfortable and less responsive. Backspin shots tend to bounce lower once it comes in contact with the ground. This may make a receiver who has prepared for a different shot, miss the ball completely when swinging.

Tennis players use the backspin shot while on defense as it takes a longer time to travel to the opponent, giving the defender more time to get back into a ready position.
